*Alastair Campbell
"After losing my best friend - the journalist John Merritt - to leukaemia in 1994 and later John's daughter Ellie to the same disease I want to make sure I am doing all I can to support Leukaemia Research. "

Alastair Campbell is best known for his years as communications director for former Prime Minister Tony Blair, for whom he worked from 1994 to 2003. Prior to Number 10, Alastair had enjoyed a long and successful career as a journalist, serving as political editor of the Daily Mirror.

In his letter to the Prime Minister on leaving Downing Street, Alastair outlined his plans for the future: "I also intend to devote more time and effort to Leukaemia Research with which I worked very closely, when running the London Marathon earlier this year." Alastair's participation in the marathon was a huge media story in itself, as was the fact that his efforts raised more than £370,000. He has also run the BUPA Great North Run and the Great Ethiopian Run.

Never one to rest on his laurels, this year Alastair took up the challenge of the 2004 London Triathlon - a gruelling test of endurance for any athlete. He led a team of 150 triathletes who brought in an amazing £300,000 for Leukaemia Research.

He is Triathlon Team Captain and continues to participate in a range of events for the charity.
