Day 3: Tunbridge Wells - Penshurst Place
Date of walk: 12 October 2008

Set in the beautiful Weald of Kent, Penshurst Place has stood on the banks of the river Medway since the 14th century, when the medieval Baron’s Hall was built as a country retreat for the Lord Mayor of London, Sir John de Pulteney. Since 1552 it has been the ancestral home the Sidneys and today Philip Sidney, Viscount De L’Isle, continues the tradition of hospitality and preservation of their much-loved family home.
The gardens at Penshurst Place are one of the most beautiful gardens in England and probably one of the oldest, with records dating back to 1346. The enchanting formal gardens were laid out in Elizabethan times by Sir Henry Sidney and have remained remarkably true to this early design.
Penshurst Place and Gardens is a truly great English house and garden and is a fantastic location to join Beefy on his 6-mile walk.
